Happy blogiversary to me.
This little blog of mine was born three years ago, on January 27th, 2004.
On January 26th, my sister said to me, “Why don’t you have a blog?” “Why don’t I?” I asked myself, and thus a(nother) blog came to be.
My husband said, “You should name it Finslippy.” “That’s an excellent idea,” I said, “and besides, it’s not like anyone who doesn’t know what Finslippy means would ever read it.”
A couple of years before, I had a dream in which I was asked to re-name dolphins. “Dolphin,” said the mysterious language people coming to me for advice, wasn’t evocative enough.
I thought for a minute. “Flipperpuppy?” I offered.
Too hard to say, they said.
“Finslippy, then,” I said, and they said, “Perfect.”
So there you are, all you people who’ve waited so long to know what the name means. It’s not as exciting as you had hoped for, I know.
I can’t even begin to say how much this blog has brought me: so much, and so much more than I ever could have expected. Thank you all for reading, and commenting, and being part of my life.

This is almost as good as finding out that the answer to the meaning of life, the universe and everything is 42. I'm sure the finslippys would agree.

D'oh! And happy blogiversary. Many happy returns.
Posted by: LetterB | January 29, 2007 at 11:48 AM
And now I would like to know if it's pronounced "fin-slippy" (as in "those dolphins have some slippery fins!") or whether it's "fins-lippy." Having heard the explanation, I am leaning towards the former. But just knowing for sure would rock my world. Also, I would have one less thing to ponder at night, which would free me up a little to brainstorm solutions to some of the world's other problems. Thank you.

It's fin-slippy, NBB. You're welcome!
Posted by: alice | January 29, 2007 at 11:52 AM
Oh! Oh! Oh! The meaning of Finslippy! I never expected to find that revelation this morning.
But...will this be like Maddy and David having sex on Moonlighting? With the mystery gone, will the suspense endure?
Seriously, though, thanks for writing a great blog. I enjoy reading it and find inspiration often.

I am new to this blog (and more generally new to the world of blogging), but I am so impressed not only by the quality of your writing but also by the clarity you bring to so many issues. So thank you, and happy anniversary.

I'm just not sure what to do with myself now that I can stop wondering what it means! ;)
Happy 3rd Blogiversary. What's the appropriate gift for 3 years? Is that paper? Clocks? Belly-button lint? Not sure.
Thank you for keeping us all entertained.

Now that I know what a Finslippy is I can finally quit reading your blog. Unless it's a cruel joke and tomorrow you'll be like, "Hahahaha...THAT'S not what it means!" Crap. See you tomorrow.
Happy Blogiversary!

I realize that flipperpuppy may not be as good of a blog name as finslippy, but oh man is that a funny word. I can't say it without giggling. Should probably stop mumbling and giggling while at work now...
Posted by: craige | January 29, 2007 at 01:13 PM
Happy Blogiversary! And thanks for the explanation. A dream-inspired blog name - Awesome!
Posted by: LadyBug | January 29, 2007 at 01:13 PM
I think you've made the day of women bloggers everywhere (oh, and you men too).
Posted by: OMSH | January 29, 2007 at 01:24 PM
Had you ran a contest of guessers I would have guessed the title came from a weird dream! I win, I win! What do I win!
Posted by: kerflop | January 29, 2007 at 01:26 PM
The meaning of finslippy! I love it.
Posted by: Beth | January 29, 2007 at 01:36 PM
Thanks for being my practice finslippy.
Posted by: Mocha | January 29, 2007 at 01:44 PM
Do you know how many nights I have stayed awake trying to figure out what finslippy means? Well now I can get some sleep.
Happy Blogiversary!

Okay that totally sounds like something Henry would come up with :)
Posted by: kate | January 29, 2007 at 01:54 PM
When the dolphins find out someone changed their name, they're gonna be pissed. Although how'll they show it through those charming perma-grins?
Many happy returns!

Coleridge got Xanadu from a dream. Elias Howe got the modern sewing machine. Some other guy figured out DNA.
But you, Alice, you got this blog!
And I am so very glad. :) Happy Blogiversary.

Finslippy! Of course!
Congratulations, and thank you for sharing your life and writing with us. I really admire your way with words.

Wow! I have always wondered. And now I know. And knowing is half of the battle. Why, why, oh why, do I always want to sing GI Joe, a real American hero after saying that? Grr. Although Shipwreck was awfully cute...

One of life's great mysteries, solved. Okay, onto the heaven/hell question...

I feel like I just walked up to David Carradine and was given the secret of Life. Or is it Keith? I can never remember.
Bless your heart.
And no.
Thank YOU.
It's been a pleasure.
Posted by: Jennifer | January 29, 2007 at 03:08 PM
Congratulations. I knew, somewhere in my head, that finslippy was something oceany. I'm so happy to have been a part of this place called finslippy.
Posted by: jess | January 29, 2007 at 03:29 PM
very nice, that explanation, and completely logical.
sometimes people ask me why i enjoy reading blogs and then I say "dude! it's because the blogs I read are written by very brilliant people". I say all that in German, of course, but whatever.
what I wanted to say is I aspire to you, Alice.
Posted by: Leonie | January 29, 2007 at 03:52 PM
Happy blogiversary and uh...good word, that.

Happy blogiversary to you! You were the first real blog I ever read (a whole three months ago), and part of the reason I got off my butt and started writing my own. Look forward to reading Finslippy for years to come.

I wonder when Hallmark will start making blogiversary cards? On the inside it could say, "Way to go with all that typing!" Seriously, happy day, and what a good day it is. Where would we be without the wonderful Finslippy?
Posted by: Samantha | January 29, 2007 at 06:48 PM
So funny. Up until now, I always associated January 27th, 2004 with President Bush welcoming President Kwasniewski to the White House. NOW I have something ELSE to celebrate!
Happy Three Years of Finslippy, Alice. You will always be one of my favorites. (You too, President Kwasniewski, you too. Stop it.)
