Happy blogiversary to me.

This little blog of mine was born three years ago, on January 27th, 2004.

On January 26th, my sister said to me, “Why don’t you have a blog?” “Why don’t I?” I asked myself, and thus a(nother) blog came to be.

My husband said, “You should name it Finslippy.” “That’s an excellent idea,” I said, “and besides, it’s not like anyone who doesn’t know what Finslippy means would ever read it.”

A couple of years before, I had a dream in which I was asked to re-name dolphins. “Dolphin,” said the mysterious language people coming to me for advice, wasn’t evocative enough.

I thought for a minute. “Flipperpuppy?” I offered.

Too hard to say, they said.

“Finslippy, then,” I said, and they said, “Perfect.”

So there you are, all you people who’ve waited so long to know what the name means. It’s not as exciting as you had hoped for, I know.

I can’t even begin to say how much this blog has brought me: so much, and so much more than I ever could have expected. Thank you all for reading, and commenting, and being part of my life.

This is almost as good as finding out that the answer to the meaning of life, the universe and everything is 42. I'm sure the finslippys would agree.

D'oh! And happy blogiversary. Many happy returns.

And now I would like to know if it's pronounced "fin-slippy" (as in "those dolphins have some slippery fins!") or whether it's "fins-lippy." Having heard the explanation, I am leaning towards the former. But just knowing for sure would rock my world. Also, I would have one less thing to ponder at night, which would free me up a little to brainstorm solutions to some of the world's other problems. Thank you.

It's fin-slippy, NBB. You're welcome!

Oh! Oh! Oh! The meaning of Finslippy! I never expected to find that revelation this morning.

But...will this be like Maddy and David having sex on Moonlighting? With the mystery gone, will the suspense endure?

Seriously, though, thanks for writing a great blog. I enjoy reading it and find inspiration often.

Most excellent, Alice. Happy Blogiversary and thanks for writing so freaking well. I heart your writing so very much.

Ahh, my life is now complete.

Congrats on your blogiversary. :)

I am new to this blog (and more generally new to the world of blogging), but I am so impressed not only by the quality of your writing but also by the clarity you bring to so many issues. So thank you, and happy anniversary.

Yay! Happy Blogoversary! You mean a lot to us too!

No one in my office got why I was so excited, but I am. Happy Blogiversary!

Well Congrats! (And I'm fully fascinated to finally learn where that one-of-a-kind name came from!)

Happy Blogaversary!

Oooh, and you swore you'd never tell too. Didn't you? Once? Or maybe that was my dream.

Wow, I have to come out of lurkdom now. ;) Happy Blogiversary, and thanks from me too for being so profound and yet so funny. You have helped me through more insane toddler moments than I can count!

It's your blogiversary? What a cooincidence! Today is my unblogiversary!
Just being silly, HAPPY BLOGIVERSARY to you!

I'm just not sure what to do with myself now that I can stop wondering what it means! ;)

Happy 3rd Blogiversary. What's the appropriate gift for 3 years? Is that paper? Clocks? Belly-button lint? Not sure.

Thank you for keeping us all entertained.

Ah, now I know what it is, and I know I like it.

I think William Safire should know about this.

Even finslippier!

"Thank you all for reading, and commenting, and being part of my life."

Thanks for inviting us in!
Happy blogiversary!

Congratulations and thanks for sharing your life w/ us.

Now that I know what a Finslippy is I can finally quit reading your blog. Unless it's a cruel joke and tomorrow you'll be like, "Hahahaha...THAT'S not what it means!" Crap. See you tomorrow.
Happy Blogiversary!

I realize that flipperpuppy may not be as good of a blog name as finslippy, but oh man is that a funny word. I can't say it without giggling. Should probably stop mumbling and giggling while at work now...

Happy Blogiversary! And thanks for the explanation. A dream-inspired blog name - Awesome!

I think you've made the day of women bloggers everywhere (oh, and you men too).

Had you ran a contest of guessers I would have guessed the title came from a weird dream! I win, I win! What do I win!

The meaning of finslippy! I love it.

Thanks for being my practice finslippy.

Do you know how many nights I have stayed awake trying to figure out what finslippy means? Well now I can get some sleep.

Happy Blogiversary!

Okay that totally sounds like something Henry would come up with :)

When the dolphins find out someone changed their name, they're gonna be pissed. Although how'll they show it through those charming perma-grins?

Many happy returns!

Coleridge got Xanadu from a dream. Elias Howe got the modern sewing machine. Some other guy figured out DNA.

But you, Alice, you got this blog!

And I am so very glad. :) Happy Blogiversary.

Finslippy! Of course!

Congratulations, and thank you for sharing your life and writing with us. I really admire your way with words.

What a dream! I'm glad I know now. Thanks for sharing your writing for four years.

Oooooh, I like it. Thanks for inviting me (us)into your life. It's a fun place to be.

Happy blogiversary!

Congratulations on your three-year blogiversary! I love reading, so I hope you'll keep it up for many more years.

Wow! I have always wondered. And now I know. And knowing is half of the battle. Why, why, oh why, do I always want to sing GI Joe, a real American hero after saying that? Grr. Although Shipwreck was awfully cute...

One of life's great mysteries, solved. Okay, onto the heaven/hell question...

I feel like I just walked up to David Carradine and was given the secret of Life. Or is it Keith? I can never remember.

Bless your heart.

And no.

Thank YOU.

It's been a pleasure.

Congratulations. I knew, somewhere in my head, that finslippy was something oceany. I'm so happy to have been a part of this place called finslippy.

very nice, that explanation, and completely logical.

sometimes people ask me why i enjoy reading blogs and then I say "dude! it's because the blogs I read are written by very brilliant people". I say all that in German, of course, but whatever.
what I wanted to say is I aspire to you, Alice.

Happy blogiversary and uh...good word, that.

Finslippy.
"Now you know what it is, and you STILL like it."

Happy Blogoversary

Happy 3rd blogversary. You are one of the very best writers. Thank you for keeping the blog going! May you never run out of things to say!

Yay for mysteries being revealed!

Finally. The Answer. Thanks.

Happy blogiversary to you! You were the first real blog I ever read (a whole three months ago), and part of the reason I got off my butt and started writing my own. Look forward to reading Finslippy for years to come.

on your blogiversary, you give us a gift. how typical and lovely of you. thank you for your writing. thank you for your humor. now go eat some blogcake.

are you going to have to change your tagline now?

I wonder when Hallmark will start making blogiversary cards? On the inside it could say, "Way to go with all that typing!" Seriously, happy day, and what a good day it is. Where would we be without the wonderful Finslippy?

So funny. Up until now, I always associated January 27th, 2004 with President Bush welcoming President Kwasniewski to the White House. NOW I have something ELSE to celebrate!

Happy Three Years of Finslippy, Alice. You will always be one of my favorites. (You too, President Kwasniewski, you too. Stop it.)
