This is what I want to never forget.
We are looking for lucky acorns, because Henry wants to make a wish.
"It should be flat but not broken," he tells me. Everyone knows the Impossible Acorn is the luckiest.
I pick up an un-flat but pretty acorn. "I don't know, Henry, this one feels lucky to me."
He looks it over. "It's not flat, but it's okay," he says.
He squeezes it in his fist and brings it up to his mouth. Clamps his eyes shut, and whispers. Loudly, so I can hear. But I'm not telling you what the wish is, because everyone knows then it won't come true.
He looks at me, nods, then tosses the acorn. "Good," he says. Now we can finish our walk. We're not crossing any more streets, but we hold hands anyway.

Oh, did you need me for something? Because after reading this I have to go and get pregnant. Right now. Bye.

I'm with Em, this made me totally ready to have a baby. STOP doing that to me. I have dogs. I'm good with only having dogs. They're sort of like babies... Right?

We have GOT to hook our children up. Seriously.

Lovely story! As crazy as they drive us, when kids are that age they can be incredibly sweet, too.
Posted by: Jaynee | October 11, 2007 at 12:36 PM
I will not share this with my children because I do not want to be looking through all of the acorns. Good luck on his wish!

Henry sounds darling. Every time I read about him he gets cuter! Thanks for sharing.

Adorable. It's time like those that make you wish you had a video crew with you to catch all the action.

I've been loving fall all day (hello cool, crip air and delicious seasonal pumpkin donuts) - this post made me love it just a little bit more.

That's the stuff that voids out all previous irritation over, say, incessant talking.
Posted by: rimarama | October 11, 2007 at 03:02 PM
Oh, my uterus. Okay, remember, self. You already have one. Just because he drew a picture of you as a butt today doesn't mean another one is in order...

The Cute Overlord reigns. (PS: write down that wish someplace and store it, because you'll remember this part, but you might forget that.)

Oh, good NIGHT. Good night. That is what I'm talking about. Child number two. Start packing your bags.
This morning, my 18 month old son was in bed with me, and he said, "Mom" and then he said something inaudible. I said, "What was that, honey?"
And then he said, just loud enough for me to hear, "Pleased to meet you."

My Better Half always teases the kids by saying, when the ask him what he wished for after blowing out birthday candles, etc. "I wished that I could tell you my wish." And they groan and complain and we all laugh.
Hope you Henry made a better wish than that one.

It's getting awfully DUSTY in here...excuse me while I find a tissue to dab my eyes.

What a sweet story. What a sweet kid! And what a sweet mother you must be!

He sounds very, very smart for a five-year-old. And witty. He's a charmer already.

*sigh* This is why I started blogging. Because I don't want to forget this stuff. And since I can't even remember that I have water running in the sink when I walk out to get the mail, chances are I would forget sweet things such as this.

I like this post because lately I've been feeling a bit like all mommies do (me too) is complain about how hard and inconvenient it is to have a kid.

Another good thing about Five. Just when you're ready to kick them to the curb, they pull one of these to remind you that they're really worth all the trouble. Mine does this great motioning for his baby sister to comfort him when he hurts himself - it's like she's the only one who can make him feel better. She loves to hug him and then we all cry together..

This story is adorable! It made me smile after a stressful day. Thank you for sharing that.

Yesterday was Harry's birthday party. Following two days of torrential rain here in Massachusetts, it was a beautiful day. Harry says "thank you god, for a sunny party day". Who knew? Mostly God comes up under his son's name in our house, as it "J... that hurt". But Harry, he's grateful. Even made up a song...

Hey Finslippy - nice new hat you got there...

Love your new header...and the acorns.
We have an acorn fetish in our house, too. We come home from the playground with bags and bags of them and I find the little guys all over the house, tucked into corners and in the crisper in the fridge.
I think they are magical too! A lovely story...

What is it with acorns? My 18-month-old daughter is also obsessed with collecting them. They are piling up in little bowls all over the house. What to do with all of them. We are way too sentimental to toss them out.

I don't even want kids and I think my uterus just started glowing.
